As a Datacenter Architect, my responsibility covers all shared storage and shared virtualization systems. Ranging from purchasing, daily support, and implementation which includes 4PB of storage and 128 physical servers, and ~17,000 virtual machines (Citrix, Windows, RedHat, etc…) as part of my role, I designed two new datacenters and migrated all of Hyatt’s Global IT services with at most 4 hours outages at the application level, with all customer facing application requiring no downtime.
At Caterpillar, my responsibility covered a variety of Technical Infrastructure components comprised of RedHat, Linux, VMware, and Windows servers, Network Attached and SAN storage as well as TSM. I was also responsible for driving four major IT projects with the largest project being automating Caterpillar’s disaster recovery plan between our Primary and Secondary data centers. The project was finished in less than 2 months and was successfully used during the East Peoria Flood of June 2013. We did it with an RPO of zero for all mission critical applications with an RTO of 15mins for mission critical and 45mins for all customer facing. With all lower applications up and running within 4 hours.
During my time with Semaphore, I was responsible for running over 30 virtualization projects. These projects ranged in size from $20k very small customers with a few servers to a $1m project which involved building a Cloud based app using only flexible Cloud based hosting. (DigitalOcean) We were able to quadruple the size of the app without needing human intervention.
At IBM my primary role was transitioning customer supported shared storage and virtualized environments to IBM Global Services supported, which involved project management and project scheduling along with migrating customer system to a standardized support model by using my own scripts and processes, to automate the day to day activities and monitoring of the SAN infrastructure, which resulted in a cost decrease of 30 %, without any service disruption increase. I also provided guidance and training to junior members of the storage team, regarding network security and troubleshooting the storage system. For these companies, I designed, documented, and executed appropriate maintenance procedures including storage system upgrades, patch management, and SAN/NAS backups with quarterly full maintenance cycles.
Through Morrison Institute of Technology I earned an A.A.S degree in Systems and Networking Administration. I trained on Cisco’s small business class networking equipment, ranging from PIX based firewalls to catalyst class switches. Also, I learned to fully design a redundant Windows Exchange 2010 cluster which included SPAM detection and off-site backups. I learned about building both RedHat and Ubuntu based master VMware images for mass server deployments. Security standards across a variety of servers and desktops, including Windows XP, Vista, 7, Ubuntu and RedHat, were a part of my learning curriculum. I also learned about IT business management which included generating cost benefit reports for new IT purchases, security vulnerability reports, and customer outage risk reports.
I attend Sauk Valley Community College as a dual enrolled student at Sterling High School. While there I learned about Cisco’s IP PBX phone systems which included configuring auto enrollment of desktop phones for end users. I also student taught an Introduction to Computer repair and programming class at Whiteside Area Career Center in Sterling, IL. During my apprenticeship at WACC I was responsible for the day to day administrator of over 100 student and staff desktop computers and related services. I was in charge of migrating all the desktop computers from Windows XP to Windows 7 which included doing a domain migration from Windows Server 2003 to Windows Server 2008, without impacting students and staff. This degree was earned while still enrolled at Sterling High School.
